London, Aug 10 (NationPress) Arsenal's head coach Mikel Arteta has issued a stark warning to defenders after their standout summer acquisition, Viktor Gyokeres, made an impressive debut by scoring his inaugural goal for the club against Athletic Club on Saturday.
His goal, along with those from Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz, propelled the Gunners to a 3-0 victory in their final pre-season match. Arsenal is set to kick off their season with a challenging encounter against rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford on August 17.
Arteta cautioned rival teams that if they allow Gyokeres to be in a one-on-one scenario, he is capable of causing significant damage.
“That’s just his nature; everything he does—from his movement to the timing of his runs and his ability to anticipate the next play—is driven by instinct. This is precisely why he has found the net so frequently in the past few seasons. It’s not merely luck; it’s his prowess, and he’s always on the lookout for scoring opportunities,” Arteta explained.
“His goal-scoring threat is immense; he effectively challenges both center-backs. When he’s in space in one-on-one situations, he’s lethal. He also opens up plenty of room for our other players, and at any moment, he can be the one to score,” Arteta added.
During his tenure at Sporting, Viktor played a pivotal role in securing back-to-back Primeira Liga championships, a national cup, and finished as the league's top scorer in both seasons. Furthermore, he has shined on the international stage, netting 12 goals in his last 17 matches for Sweden.
It remains uncertain whether Kai Havertz will feature in the starting lineup for Arsenal in the upcoming season. Arteta praised the German's versatility across various positions, highlighting his contribution to enhancing the squad's overall quality.
“Especially since they can play together, Kai can adapt to different roles, which significantly boosts our squad’s quality and goal-scoring potential. Having multiple options allows us to create various challenges for our opponents, and it’s fantastic to see both players in such excellent form,” Arteta concluded.
