London, Aug 7 (NationPress) Arsenal's manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged that his team exhibited naive defending, which played a crucial role in their 3-2 friendly defeat against Villarreal, marking their second successive loss in pre-season.
After commencing their pre-season with victories over AC Milan and Newcastle United, Arsenal faced a downturn with a loss to Tottenham Hotspur and then suffered another defeat on Wednesday, falling 2-0 behind within the first 33 minutes at the Emirates Stadium against the Spanish team.
"This result is quite painful. They were remarkably efficient, but we've been naive, particularly regarding our defending in open spaces. This is something we need to master, especially given our style of play," Arteta shared with the media. "Today, we were definitely lacking in that area, and it has cost us the game for sure."
Nonetheless, Arteta expressed his approval of striker Viktor Gyokeres, who made his first start for Arsenal after his £63.5 million transfer from Sporting last month. "It was vital for him to start a match and begin building a connection with the team," Arteta noted. "He’s been with us for just over a week, but I noticed a lot of promising signs, particularly in how he attacked certain spaces."
The manager also praised 15-year-old attacking midfielder Max Dowman, who won a penalty for Arsenal. "He continues to impress, without a doubt. His impact in the game today, coupled with the efficiency he displays in every attack and action, is remarkable," the Spaniard added.
Arsenal's next challenge is against Athletic Club in their final pre-season fixture before kicking off the Premier League season against Manchester United on August 17.
