BSF Detains Smuggler with 8.5 kg of Silver Ornaments at Indo-Bangladesh Border

Kolkata, Dec 29 (NationPress) The Border Security Force (BSF) has reported the apprehension of a cross-border smuggler in the North 24-Parganas district of West Bengal on Saturday, who was found with 8.5 kg of silver ornaments. These items were intended for smuggling into Bangladesh, with an estimated value of nearly Rs 6,17,004.
According to N K Pandey, DIG and spokesperson for the BSF, South Bengal Frontier, the troops of the 143 Battalion BSF, stationed at the Tarali-1 Border Outpost, were conducting checks at the Hakimpur checkpoint when they encountered a motorcyclist heading towards the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB). The personnel halted the individual and performed a detailed search, uncovering the silver ornaments concealed within the air filter and tail light compartments of the motorcycle.
The suspect, along with the motorcycle, was taken to the Tarali-1 BOP for interrogation. He identified himself as a resident of Swarupdaha village in the Swarup Nagar police station area of North 24-Parganas.
He alleged that an unidentified individual from Bithari Bazaar had provided him with the motorcycle, informing him about the presence of the silver ornaments. His plan was to cross the BSF control line at the Hakimpur checkpoint and deliver the motorcycle and silver to another person near the IBB, for which he was promised Rs 1,300. The BSF has since handed him, along with the seized silver and motorcycle, over to the customs department in Tentulia.
The DIG commended the vigilance of the BSF troops, stating, “Thanks to their alertness, criminals are consistently being apprehended along the IBB, resulting in regular seizures. The BSF is committed to preventing smuggling and other illegal activities along the border. Those engaging in such actions will face consequences unless they change their ways.”
Another senior BSF official noted that while gold is typically smuggled from Bangladesh into India, silver, particularly in the form of ornaments, is often unlawfully exported from India to the neighboring country. There is a significant demand for Indian-made silver ornaments in Bangladesh, which smugglers exploit.
