Kolkata, June 25 (NationPress) The Border Security Force (BSF) has apprehended an Indian smuggler and confiscated over 2.4 kg of gold, estimated to be worth approximately Rs 2.43 crore, during an operation along the India-Bangladesh border in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, as per official reports.
The gold was smuggled on Tuesday from Bangladesh into India through Lakshmipur village, which is situated near the zero line border.
Personnel from the 67th Battalion of the BSF, stationed at the Lakshmipur Border Outpost (BOP), received intelligence regarding the gold smuggling activities in their jurisdiction.
"Following this intel, all patrol units and checkpoints in the area were put on high alert. At around 7:45 a.m. on Tuesday, a motorcycle was observed approaching from Lakshmipur village in a suspicious manner. The motorcycle was halted for inspection. Noticing the rider's unusual behavior, the soldiers conducted a comprehensive search and discovered two packages wrapped in plastic tape hidden beneath the seat cover. Inside, they found one gold bar and 16 gold biscuits. The motorcycle and the smuggler were promptly detained," a spokesperson from the BSF South Bengal Frontier stated.
The total weight of the gold was 2.451 kg, with an estimated market value of Rs 2,42,94,960, officials confirmed.
The confiscated gold has been forwarded to the relevant department for subsequent legal actions.
During initial questioning, the smuggler disclosed that he had obtained the gold from an individual in Lakshmipur village and was en route to deliver it to an undisclosed recipient at the Bongaon bus stand via Boyra village. He was promised a payment of Rs 1,000 per kg for the delivery," the official elaborated.
N.K. Pandey, Director Inspector General (DIG) of the BSF South Bengal Frontier, praised the vigilance of the alert personnel.
The DIG emphasized that BSF officials are well-trained, alert, and dedicated to combating illegal activities such as smuggling at the border.
The DIG also called upon border residents to report any information concerning gold smuggling to the BSF's 'Seema Sathi' helpline at 14419.
"Residents at the border can also dispatch text or voice messages via WhatsApp to 9903472227. Individuals providing credible information will be rewarded appropriately, and their confidentiality will be maintained," he added.
