Kolkata, May 4 (NationPress) The Border Security Force (BSF) announced on Sunday that they successfully confiscated 12 gold biscuits totaling 1.662 kg from the Nadia district of West Bengal, and apprehended an Indian smuggler in Tarali, located in the North 24-Parganas district, who was found with 10.83 kg of silver jewelry.
N K Pandey, the DIG and spokesperson for the South Bengal Frontier of the BSF, revealed that the personnel of the 32 Bn BSF, stationed at the Border Outpost Banpur, received credible intelligence about a gold smuggling attempt from Bangladesh through the Banpur village area.
“Following this intelligence, a tactical plan was executed, and an ambush was set near the border fence. The troops observed three suspected smugglers emerging from a trench on the Indian side and heading towards Bangladesh. Another smuggler was spotted tossing packets across the fence,” he explained.
DIG Pandey noted that the troops advanced as soon as the smugglers tried to retrieve the packets, but the smugglers, realizing the troops' presence, fled towards Phulbari (Banpur) village.
“To avoid collateral damage in this densely populated area, the troops refrained from using their weapons and pursued them on foot. Unfortunately, the three smugglers evaded capture,” he confirmed.
After searching the area, the team found 12 gold biscuits wrapped in three plastic packets.
“The total weight of the gold was 1,662 grams, valued at approximately Rs 1,56,06,180,” he added.
In a separate incident, troops from the 143 Bn BSF at the Border Outpost Tarali apprehended an Indian smuggler with 10.83 kg of silver jewelry.
“The individual was attempting to smuggle the jewelry hidden inside the fuel tank of his motorcycle at the Nityanandkati check post. The confiscated gold biscuits and silver ornaments have been turned over to the relevant authorities, and a police report has been filed against the smugglers,” he stated.
DIG Pandey commended the troops for their efforts and encouraged local residents to report any information regarding gold and silver smuggling to the BSF's Seema Sathi helpline at 14419 or via WhatsApp at 9903472227.
“Informants will be generously rewarded, and their identities will be kept confidential,” he assured.
