New Delhi, May 14 (NationPress) Leaders from both BJP and Congress have expressed their relief and joy over the safe return of Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw, who was released by the Pakistan Rangers on Wednesday after spending nearly three weeks in captivity.
Shaw inadvertently crossed the international boundary into Pakistan from the Ferozepur district of Punjab and was returned to Indian officials at the Attari-Wagah border at 10:30 a.m. This incident took place on April 23, just a day following the tragic Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 civilian lives.
BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership during this situation. “This incident showcases the bravery of the Indian Armed Forces and the strong leadership of PM Modi. Similar to Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, Purnam Shaw represents our pride and resilience,” Chugh stated in an interview.
Sukanta Majumdar, the BJP's West Bengal president and Union Minister of State, also shared his happiness regarding Shaw’s return. “After 22 days, our BSF jawan Purnam Shaw is back home. We have consistently supported him and his family since day one. I personally reassured his wife of our commitment to bringing him back. This is the new India under PM Modi — we do not abandon our soldiers. I extend my gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Home Minister for their efforts,” he added.
Congress leader Hussain Dalwai also welcomed Shaw’s return and labeled it a “humanitarian act.”
Earlier today, the BSF confirmed Shaw's return in an official statement: “Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw has been retrieved from Pakistan by the BSF at the Attari-Wagah border today at 10:30 hrs. Shaw had unintentionally crossed over to Pakistan while on duty in the Ferozepur sector on April 23, 2025, around 11:50 hrs and was detained by the Pak Rangers.
The handover followed established border protocols. Officials mentioned that standard procedures would be observed, including medical examinations to verify if Shaw experienced any torture or inhumane treatment during his captivity.
Shaw’s wife, Rajni, previously visited Ferozepur and met with senior BSF officials to seek assistance in securing his release. She was reassured that efforts were being made at the highest levels to bring her husband home.
This development comes in the wake of India and Pakistan reaching an “understanding” to halt military operations on May 10, following an escalation at the border due to India’s ‘Operation Sindoor’, which targeted various terror bases and their infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7.
