Chandigarh, April 9 (NationPress) A Border Security Force (BSF) soldier sustained injuries from an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion along the India-Pakistan border in Gurdaspur district, Punjab, officials reported on Wednesday.

The incident occurred during the night of April 8-9, according to the BSF.

A BSF team was conducting an area domination patrol ahead of the border security fence when they discovered several improvised explosive devices (IEDs) with concealed wires “well within” Indian territory.

While securing and sanitizing the area, the triggering mechanism of some IEDs, which was hidden, accidentally activated, causing a severe leg injury to a BSF soldier.

The BSF bomb disposal unit arrived at the scene after dawn, conducted a search, and neutralized the IEDs, officials stated.

This incident happened within the jurisdiction of the Dorangla police station.

Sources indicated that it was likely a malicious attempt to target security personnel stationed at the border as well as local farmers.

Despite facing numerous challenges, such as adverse weather and smuggling activities, the BSF remains committed to safeguarding the borders around the clock.

In 2023, the BSF personnel from the Punjab Frontier have returned 12 Pakistani nationals who inadvertently crossed the international border to the Pakistan Rangers. In response to floods in the border districts of Punjab—Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Tarn Taran, and Ferozepur—the BSF typically carries out rescue and relief operations, evacuating villagers in flood-prone areas along the Ravi and Sutlej rivers to safer locations.

The BSF not only protects the communities in bordering areas but also promotes their welfare through various civic action initiatives. These include free medical camps, skill development training, coaching for recruitment into Central Armed Police Forces and the army, sports tournaments, and cultural events. Furthermore, the BSF makes significant efforts to aid disadvantaged residents in border regions. To raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse among the youth and local communities in border areas, the BSF organizes cycle rallies, awareness campaigns, and walkathons with active involvement from local youth.
