Jammu, Nov 4 (NationPress) The Lt Governor of J&K, Manoj Sinha, urged the citizens to embrace the principles of the revered farmer saint, Baba Jittoo, emphasizing that only through collective effort can we forge a robust, secure, thriving, and self-sufficient Jammu and Kashmir.
The L-G officially opened the annual Jhiri Mela, a ten-day event celebrated in Jammu, which marks the initiation of one of the region's largest spiritual congregations.
“Today, I inaugurated the Jhiri Mela at Marh sub-division in Jammu. I paid homage to Baba Jittoo and Bua Kouri. I dedicated a community hall for pilgrims, established four modular bus stops, and laid the groundwork for the inaugural indoor sports complex under CSR at Marh,” stated the L-G on X.
This event is a collaborative effort between the Directorate of Tourism and the District Administration, honoring the legacy of the 16th-century farmer saint, Baba Jittoo.
Legend has it that Baba Jittoo, a simple farmer, gave his life resisting the exploitation by a cruel landlord. His daughter, Bua Kouri, later chose to self-immolate on his funeral pyre in a profound act of love and sorrow.
“Together, we can build a strong, secure, prosperous and self-reliant Jammu and Kashmir,” the L-G remarked.
Numerous farmers and pilgrims from Jammu, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Haryana have gathered to partake in the fair, which runs from November 4 to 13.
The participation of the Agriculture Department at the Mela provides a crucial opportunity for farmers to enhance their knowledge, gain exposure to new technologies, and engage with government initiatives, all while honoring Baba Jittoo's lasting impact.
Security measures have been heightened with the deployment of J&K Police and other security forces in and around the Mela.
