BVI Premier Wheatley meets FM Sitharaman in New Delhi to boost financial ties
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday, 24 August met British Virgin Islands (BVI) Premier and Finance Minister Natalio D. Wheatley in New Delhi, as the island territory launched its first-ever trade mission to India aimed at deepening cooperation in financial services, FinTech, and digital transformation.
What the Meeting Covered
Wheatley, who is leading a 12-member delegation of financial services experts, briefed Sitharaman on the BVI's intent to expand its engagement with India across financial services, FinTech, digital transformation, trade, investment promotion, and capacity building. Sitharaman, in turn, underscored that India offers a large and rapidly growing market for financial services and investment, and welcomed the prospect of engagement in areas of mutual interest.
The VI-India Trade Mission
The delegation is undertaking the first-ever Virgin Islands (VI)-India Trade Mission, scheduled from 24 to 31 August. The tour covers New Delhi, GIFT City, Mumbai, and Bengaluru — a circuit that maps India's key financial and technology hubs. The primary focus, according to Wheatley, is the financial services industry.
Wheatley told reporters before departing for India: India has the biggest population in the world and is home to multi-million and billion-dollar tech companies.
Why BVI Is Looking East
Wheatley framed the outreach in explicitly strategic terms, noting that the BVI already does strong business in China and Hong Kong but sees untapped potential in India. 'We do very good business in China, Hong Kong, et cetera, but we believe we could strengthen our presence in India. So, financial services are key,' he said.
He also pointed to the cultural and diplomatic groundwork already in place. 'The Caribbean is no stranger to India; we have many persons of Indian descent in the Caribbean, and they've introduced Indian culture to the Caribbean. So, it's quite natural for us to want to establish a stronger relationship with India as one of the BRICS countries, as one of the up-and-coming countries in the world as it pertains to transitioning from a developing country to a serious world power,' Wheatley said.
Diplomatic Context
Wheatley noted that prior engagement with an Indian ambassador based in Jamaica had already laid the groundwork for the mission. 'It's an opportunity to make friends formally with the Indian government, and we've already had engagement with one of their ambassadors right here in the Caribbean, based in Jamaica, and we had a wonderful exchange,' he said. This comes amid India's broader push to deepen economic ties with smaller island economies that serve as significant offshore financial centres.
What Comes Next
The delegation's visits to GIFT City and Mumbai are expected to produce sector-specific conversations on FinTech collaboration and investment structuring. The outcomes of the week-long mission could set the template for a more formal bilateral framework between India and the BVI in financial services.
