Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 1 (NationPress) On Sunday, the Cabinet sanctioned the Union Budget 2026-27 in a Parliament meeting led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Union Cabinet convened at Sansad Bhawan at 10 a.m., and following approval, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman took the Budget to Parliament for presentation.
Prior to this, FM Sitharaman met with President Droupadi Murmu to present her a copy of the digital budget.
Upon her arrival at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President greeted Sitharaman with 'dahi-cheeni' (curd and sugar). The Finance Minister was observed carrying her iconic 'bahi-khata', a tablet wrapped in a red cloth adorned with a golden national emblem.
Accompanying the Finance Minister were Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, Chief Economic Advisor Dr. V. Anantha Nageswaran, CBDT Chairman Ravi Agrawal, and other officials.
This presentation marked Sitharaman's ninth consecutive Union Budget in the Lok Sabha. In a shift towards sustainability, she began using a digital tablet for the Budget papers in 2021.
The 'bahi-khata' is essentially a red pouch that contains the digital tablet with all Budget documentation.
This year, Sitharaman chose a deep maroon Kanjeevaram saree from Tamil Nadu, which featured a deep maroon base with a contrasting border and delicate gold accents, complemented by a yellow blouse.
Economists predict that the Budget will aim to strike a balance between fostering growth and ensuring fiscal soundness, while also addressing immediate challenges posed by significant geopolitical shifts.
It's anticipated that this budget will emphasize capital expenditure, especially in sectors identified as strategically critical due to current geopolitical considerations.
Unlike the FY26 Budget that focused on enhancing middle-class consumption through tax reliefs, the FY27 Budget is expected to take a more selective approach to stimulate consumption.
