Did Calcutta HC Approve NIA Investigation into Beldanga Violence?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 20 (NationPress) On Tuesday, a Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court granted the Union government the authority to initiate a National Investigation Agency (NIA) investigation into the unrest that transpired over two days last week in Beldanga, located in the minority-majority Murshidabad district of West Bengal. This unrest reportedly stemmed from the alleged murder of a local migrant worker from the district in Jharkhand.
The bench, comprising Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Partha Sarathi Sen, also mandated the deployment of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel in Beldanga until complete normalcy is achieved. If needed, additional CAPF units may be stationed in the area to ensure safety.
Furthermore, the court urged the state government to effectively utilize the CAPF in the affected regions.
This directive followed a thorough hearing on a Public Interest Litigation submitted by the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, who requested the deployment of CAPF forces and an NIA inquiry into the situation.
Justices Paul and Sen instructed the District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police of Murshidabad to submit affidavits to the court within 15 days, affirming their commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of the residents.
Previously, Adhikari had also reached out to Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, seeking intervention regarding the ongoing tensions in Beldanga and formally raising the issue in the Calcutta High Court.
In his communication to the Governor, Adhikari highlighted the inaction of both the state and district administrations in managing the unruly mob that wreaked havoc in Beldanga from Friday afternoon into Saturday.
He also reported incidents where journalists, including female reporters, faced severe assaults while covering the disturbances.
