Kolkata, Sep 26 (NationPress) The Calcutta High Court mandated on Friday that all student hostels affiliated with Jadavpur University in Kolkata will be closed for the entire duration of the Durga Puja holidays.
The Division Bench, comprising Justice Sujay Paul and Justice Smita Das De, instructed the authorities of Jadavpur University to ensure the hostels are shut down within 48 hours and to remain closed until the conclusion of the festive vacation.
The judges highlighted that this measure is essential to prevent unauthorized individuals from accessing the hostel premises during the holiday period.
Furthermore, the bench recommended that the university administration collaborate with police authorities if needed to secure the hostels against outside entries during this time.
Additionally, it was advised that the university officials convene with the West Bengal Education Department after the vacation to devise strategies for enhancing campus security, particularly regarding the installation of CCTV systems.
Following the meeting's outcomes, the university will be required to present a report to the same bench when the case is heard again after the festival.
To recall, on March 2 of this year, State Education Minister Bratya Basu encountered student protests during his visit to Jadavpur University for a function hosted by the West Bengal College and University Professors' Association (WBCUPA).
The incident led to injuries for both Basu and two protesting students.
In light of security concerns raised, a public interest litigation was recently filed at the Calcutta High Court, which previously ruled that no political figures could be invited to any events or seminars at Jadavpur University.
