Kolkata, Oct 14 (NationPress) The Calcutta High Court has imposed a restriction on the presence of outsiders within the grounds of the private medical college & hospital in Durgapur, located in the West Burdwan district of West Bengal, following the disturbing incident of a gangrape involving a second-year student last week.
In delivering this ruling, the single-judge bench presided over by Justice Shampa Dutt (Paul) mandated that the state police must provide and guarantee complete security for the institution.
Earlier on Tuesday morning, officials from the private medical college & hospital submitted a plea to the Calcutta High Court to address the issue of crowds gathering in front of the college premises, particularly as examinations are currently being held.
This case was reviewed by Justice Dutt (Paul) later in the day, and following an extensive hearing, the court restricted access to the premises for outsiders and instructed the police to assure the safety of the college.
The gangrape incident occurred on October 10, when the victim, originally from Odisha, stepped outside the college grounds after 8 p.m. to buy food. She was subsequently dragged into a nearby wooded area and assaulted. To date, five individuals have been apprehended in connection with this case, and they remain in police custody.
In the meantime, a three-member delegation from the BJP in Odisha, led by Balasore MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi, arrived in Durgapur on Tuesday afternoon. They plan to communicate with the victim's family and potentially speak with the victim herself.
The BJP team is also expected to confer with senior officials from the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, which oversees the area where the private medical college & hospital is located, to obtain updates on the investigation's progress. Sarangi mentioned that he would address the media only after meeting with the victim's family.
Furthermore, the delegation intends to present a report on the situation to the Odisha government.
