Kolkata, Nov 1 (NationPress) The trial concerning the gangrape of a second-year student from a private medical college & hospital in Durgapur, located in West Bengal's West Burdwan district, is set to commence on Saturday.

The proceedings will take place at the Additional Sessions Court in Durgapur, having been moved from the jurisdiction of the Durgapur’s Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate. This case is prioritized on a fast-track schedule.

On Thursday, law enforcement presented the charge sheet precisely 30 days after the incident, identifying six suspects who are charged with various offenses, such as rape, gang-rape, and extortion.

The victim's classmate and boyfriend, who was with her on the night of the incident near the wooded area outside the college campus, faces charges of rape, while three others are implicated in gang-rape charges, and two additional suspects are charged with extortion.

Although the victim has returned to her home state of Odisha, an official from the Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissionerate, which oversees the private medical college and the crime scene, stated that she will return to Durgapur whenever necessary for the trial.

The victim recently visited the correctional facility to participate in the test identification (TI) parade. Earlier this week, the TI parade report presented in court revealed that her classmate, Sheikh Firdous, had raped her in October.

On October 10, the second-year medical student was reportedly gang-raped by five individuals in a wooded area adjacent to the private medical college and hospital.

Following the victim's complaint, police arrested all five suspects. Authorities indicated that only one person was directly involved in the physical sexual assault of the medical student. Subsequently, the police also detained the victim's classmate and boyfriend, whose statements exhibited inconsistencies during questioning.
