Kolkata, Oct 22 (NationPress) A Durgapur court has dismissed the bail requests of four individuals accused in the gang-rape case involving a second-year medical student, placing them in judicial custody. Furthermore, the court has scheduled a Test Identification (TI) parade for all suspects on October 24.
On Wednesday afternoon, four of the six apprehended suspects appeared before the judge, who mandated a five-day judicial custody for them.
Earlier on Tuesday, two additional suspects were also brought before the court, where their bail pleas were similarly denied, leading to their placement in judicial custody.
The court has mandated the TI parade for all accused on October 24, after which all six will be presented again on October 27 when their judicial custody period concludes.
Additionally, the court reviewed the WhatsApp exchanges between the victim and her classmate. Public Prosecutor Bibhas Chatterjee commented, “There is clarity in this case now. Those truly implicated will face consequences. The court heard testimonies from two individuals on Tuesday, with the remaining four’s applications heard today. The government has opposed their bail requests.”
He also mentioned that the victim’s classmate, who has been detained, asserts he had no involvement in the incident. “We have provided substantial evidence to the court. We anticipate a swift resolution to the case,” Chatterjee added.
According to sources, police have escalated charges against two of the six accused.
The initial case against the six detainees included charges of gang-rape, criminal conspiracy, common intention, and extortion through intimidation. Police sources revealed that additional charges of extortion, wrongful confinement, and outraging a woman’s modesty have been filed against two of the suspects.
On October 10, a second-year medical student from Odisha was reportedly gang-raped by five individuals in a wooded area adjacent to a private medical college and hospital in Durgapur, West Burdwan district.
Acting on the victim’s complaint, police apprehended all five suspects. They stated that only one person was directly involved in the sexual assault. Subsequently, the male friend of the victim was arrested after discrepancies were found in his statements during questioning.
