Kolkata, April 6 (NationPress) The Calcutta High Court has officially annulled a first information report (FIR) filed by the CID of the West Bengal Police against the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding an ongoing investigation into a coal smuggling operation. This case has been under scrutiny by the central agency.
The FIR was initially registered at Bishnupur Police Station, located in the Diamond Harbour Police District of South 24 Parganas, back in 2002. Among those named in the FIR were prominent CBI officials, including senior officer Umesh Kumar.
In May 2022, Umesh Kumar, leading the CBI's investigative team, arrived in Bishnupur as part of the central agency's inquiry into the extensive coal smuggling scandal impacting West Bengal.
Throughout the investigative process, the CBI interrogated local Trinamool Congress leader, Haibar Akhan. Subsequently, following a complaint from Akhan, the FIR was lodged at Bishnupur Police Station, prompting the CID to take over the investigation.
The complaints against the CBI officials encompassed 13 sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). In response, the CBI sought intervention from the Calcutta High Court to dismiss the FIR against its personnel.
