Kolkata, Sep 25 (NationPress) The Calcutta High Court has called for a report from CESC Ltd, a private power utility owned by Sanjiv Goenka, regarding a series of tragic electrocution incidents resulting in multiple fatalities in and around Kolkata.
In total, ten deaths have been recorded in West Bengal, with eight occurring in Kolkata. These incidents were caused when victims encountered exposed electrical wires that were submerged in waterlogged streets due to recent rainfall.
CESC holds a dominant position in the power distribution sector within Kolkata and in the neighboring Howrah district.
With Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee directly attributing the electrocution deaths to CESC's negligence, the Calcutta High Court has initiated suo motu proceedings in this case. A formal case has been established under the division bench presided by Acting Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Apurba Sinha Roy.
During the hearing on Thursday, the bench mandated that CESC Limited submit a comprehensive report on the deaths by the next scheduled hearing.
Additionally, the Calcutta High Court directed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to present a report detailing the actions taken to improve the efficiency of the city's sewerage system to mitigate waterlogging issues.
Moreover, the bench instructed the state government to clarify its position regarding compensation for the families of the electrocution victims.
Interestingly, just the day before, Chief Minister Banerjee had announced a compensation of Rs 2,00,000 for each victim's family. She also demanded that CESC Limited provide Rs 5,00,000 in compensation to each family along with employment opportunities for one member from each affected family.
In the event that CESC Limited declines to offer jobs, the state government has pledged to step in and provide them.
