Kolkata, Sep 25 (NationPress) In response to mounting pressure, CESC Limited, a private utility company owned by Sanjiv Goenka, has declared a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families affected by electrocution incidents in various regions of West Bengal that fall under the company’s operations.
The tragic incidents, which resulted in a total of 10 fatalities in West Bengal, including eight in Kolkata, occurred when individuals came into contact with exposed electric wires submerged in waterlogged streets following heavy rainfall earlier this week.
CESC holds a dominant position in power distribution across Kolkata and the neighboring district of Howrah.
On Thursday afternoon, the executive director of CESC, Avijit Ghosh, made the compensation announcement.
“CESC is profoundly saddened by the tragic loss of life due to this natural disaster in our city. On humanitarian grounds, we have decided to provide Rs 5 lakh to each bereaved family,” stated Ghosh.
This compensation declaration came just hours after a division bench of the Calcutta High Court requested a report from CESC Limited regarding the multiple electrocution fatalities in and around Kolkata that occurred on Tuesday.
Earlier, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized CESC for the electrocution incidents and demanded that the company provide Rs 5 lakh in compensation to the families of each victim, in addition to offering employment to one member from each affected family.
The Chief Minister had also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for each family affected by the electrocution incidents.
As the compensation is disclosed, there has been no announcement from the company regarding job offers, as previously demanded by CESC.
