Kannur, April 5 (NationPress) In a significant initiative to promote a transparent, fair, and free electoral process, local authorities have implemented an extensive camera surveillance system that encompasses both the inside and outside of all polling booths throughout the Kannur district for the upcoming Assembly elections in Kerala.

With 2,177 polling stations distributed across the district, election officials have introduced a comprehensive monitoring strategy featuring complete webcasting capabilities. Cameras are being positioned not only within polling booths but also at their entrances, allowing officials to closely monitor voter activity and the overall election day process.

Officials indicated that the camera installations are progressing swiftly, with expectations to complete the setup well in advance of the elections.

This surveillance initiative aims to bolster transparency, thwart malpractices, and ensure compliance with election regulations at every phase of the voting procedure.

A notable aspect of this monitoring system is the establishment of a dual control framework for real-time oversight. A central control room will operate from the Kannur Collectorate, enabling monitoring of live feeds from all polling stations.

Moreover, individual control rooms will be established in each Assembly constituency, managed directly by the respective Returning Officers.

Election observers appointed by the Election Commission will also make regular visits to these constituency control rooms to evaluate the surveillance system's operation and ensure adherence to all protocols.

To facilitate the seamless operation of the webcasting system, specialized training programs have been conducted for personnel tasked with technical responsibilities.

Officials mentioned that trained staff will be stationed at each polling site to oversee the equipment and resolve any technical challenges that may occur during the voting process. Notably, the entire voting process in Kannur district will be documented and securely archived. The recorded footage will be stored on hard disks and subsequently submitted to the State Chief Electoral Officer for verification and records maintenance.

Authorities are optimistic that these enhanced surveillance efforts will significantly fortify the integrity of the electoral process, providing reassurance to voters and stakeholders about a smooth and transparent election in the district.

Kannur has a history of political violence that has resulted in fatalities among workers and leaders of various parties, including the BJP-RSS, Congress, CPI(M), and the Muslim League. Considering this sensitive background, the Election Commission has implemented camera surveillance across all polling booths in the district.
