Tamil Nadu Allocates Rs 800 Crore for Transparent Elections: Focus on CCTV and Voter Engagement
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, March 18 (NationPress) In a significant effort to facilitate transparent and fair Assembly elections, the Tamil Nadu government has allocated an impressive Rs 800 crore for various electoral activities throughout the state. This funding encompasses numerous needs, with a large portion dedicated to personnel management, infrastructure, and voter awareness campaigns.
A crucial element of this budget is the payment to polling staff, especially the Booth Level Officers (BLOs), who are essential to the grassroots management of elections.
Officials anticipate that around Rs 100 crore will be specifically allocated for compensating BLOs who will be on duty during polling, highlighting the extensive planning and logistical challenges of this electoral undertaking.
To boost transparency and security, the Election Department has begun the installation of one lakh IP-based CCTV cameras on a rental basis. These cameras will be strategically placed across 75,032 polling booths statewide, allowing for real-time oversight and enhancing vigilance.
The Chennai district alone has 4,079 polling booths, the highest in Tamil Nadu, emphasizing the necessity for rigorous surveillance in urban areas.
In anticipation of vote counting, authorities are establishing around 45 to 46 counting centers to encompass all 234 Assembly constituencies. Each center will feature robust infrastructure, including secure strong rooms where Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and their control units will be stored under stringent supervision after the polling concludes.
Enhanced security measures will be implemented to deter any tampering or unauthorized access. Alongside logistical preparations, the Election Department is also prioritizing efforts to increase voter participation through its Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) initiative.
To foster greater engagement, financial assistance of up to Rs 50,000 will be made available to individuals and media organizations that produce voter awareness materials.
This initiative aims to enhance voter turnout and promote informed participation, particularly among first-time voters.
With thorough planning, improved monitoring systems, and targeted outreach strategies, officials express confidence that Tamil Nadu is ready for a high-stakes electoral process, emphasizing transparency, efficiency, and inclusivity.
