Why Did a Candidate Get Arrested for Using a Proxy in the Kolkata Police Recruitment Exam?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 4 (NationPress) The authorities have taken into custody a candidate who intended to participate in the Kolkata Police recruitment examination for the Sub-Inspector role but opted for a proxy instead.
On Sunday, law enforcement reported that Abdul Khaleque was apprehended in Murshidabad district on Saturday and subsequently brought before the court, where he was remanded into police custody until January 8. This follows the earlier arrest of the proxy candidate, Lakhai Ghosh, on December 30, 2025.
As per police reports, Abdul Khaleque, hailing from Murshidabad district, had successfully passed the initial two phases of the Kolkata Police Sub-Inspector recruitment exam. However, he failed to attend the third phase, the written assessment, personally. Instead, Lakhai Ghosh, a fellow resident of his district, took the test on his behalf.
Police caught him in the act at the examination venue in Kolkata. Based on Ghosh's confession, the actual candidate, for whom Ghosh was sitting the exam, has now also been arrested.
Both Khaleque and Ghosh reside in Murshidabad. Ghosh indicated to the police that he and Khaleque had been studying for the exams together.
Ghosh had previously cleared the WBCS (Preliminary) and PSC exams. However, during questioning, he revealed that he needed funds for his ongoing exam preparations and accepted money from Khaleque to take the test for him.
On Saturday, Khaleque appeared before the court, where the judge ordered that he remain in police custody until January 8.
Government lawyer Saurin Ghoshal stated that someone else took the exam on behalf of the accused in the third phase. It remains to be seen whether Khaleque himself or someone else participated in the earlier two stages. The police are optimistic about gathering this information through further interrogation of Khaleque.
On December 30, Ghosh attempted the exam at New Alipore College in South Kolkata. However, the invigilator became suspicious due to discrepancies between Ghosh's appearance and the photo on the admit card. There was also a mismatch in signatures; Ghosh's did not align with the one on the admit card. He was subsequently detained and interrogated, leading to his arrest.
