Patna, July 16 (NationPress) In a significant move against corruption, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended three officials from the Income Tax Department, including an IRS officer, for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh in Patna, as confirmed by an official on Wednesday.
The detained individuals comprise an Assistant Director (IRS), an Inspector, and a Multi-Tasking Staff (MTS) member from the Income Tax Department.
On July 15, 2025, the CBI initiated a case against these officials after it was reported that they solicited Rs 2 lakh in bribes to release a previously confiscated amount of Rs 13 lakh and to refrain from pursuing further investigations against the complainant.
The confiscated Rs 13 lakh was allegedly seized from the complainant’s brother-in-law at the airport, which prompted the Income Tax Department to be notified.
CBI agents executed a sting operation and caught the officials red-handed while they were accepting the bribe at the Income Tax office on Veer Chand Patel Path in Patna.
During the operation, the bribe amount of Rs 2 lakh was recovered, which was collected under the direction of the IRS officer.
On July 15, the CBI also conducted searches at three locations in Patna, associated with the accused officials.
All three suspects were presented before the CBI Special Court-1 in Patna on Wednesday, where they were remanded to three days of CBI custody for further inquiry.
This incident highlights the CBI’s relentless commitment to combatting corruption in governmental sectors, especially in sensitive areas like the Income Tax Department during the electoral season in Bihar.
The case illustrates the ongoing efforts of the CBI’s anti-corruption initiatives aimed at fostering public trust and accountability in government agencies.
Previously, on March 23, the CBI had taken into custody four individuals, which included the General Manager (GM) of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the GM of a private construction firm, linked to a bribery case.
The arrests occurred right after a bribe of Rs 15 lakh was exchanged, alongside the recovery of Rs 1.18 crore in cash from the NHAI official's premises in Patna.
