Lucknow, June 30 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has charged a Railway Protection Force (RPF) inspector for allegedly soliciting a bribe of ₹60,000 from a farmer in Uttar Pradesh, who found himself in an unusual accident where a railway crossing barrier fell on his tractor trolley, an official reported on Monday.
Inspector G.S. Gautam was booked following a complaint lodged by Dhanraj Verma, a local of Maharajganj in the Ayodhya district of Uttar Pradesh.
The federal investigative agency initiated proceedings against Gautam and unidentified accomplices on June 26, citing allegations of criminal conspiracy and corruption related to a public servant accepting or soliciting bribes.
The FIR details that Verma's complaint accused G.S. Gautam of threatening to lodge a case against him with false allegations. The inspector demanded a bribe of ₹60,000 in exchange for resolving the issue and preventing the confiscation of Verma's tractor-trolley.
This bribe was solicited following the incident that occurred on June 23, around 11:30 a.m. at railway crossing number 96 in Akbarpur.
Verma recounted that he was driving through the barrier when it unexpectedly fell on his tractor. “I returned home after the situation calmed down,” Verma stated.
In his complaint to the CBI, the tractor owner mentioned that shortly after the incident, Inspector Gautam and some colleagues visited his residence and threatened to file charges against him.
“The inspector proposed to lessen the severity of my offense if I provided him with a bribe of ₹60,000,” Verma reported, adding that Gautam granted him two days to arrange the funds.
On June 25, Verma claimed that the inspector returned to his home, escalating threats of serious charges and the seizure of his tractor trolley if the bribe was not delivered.
Reluctant to comply with the bribe request, Verma approached the CBI to file a complaint against Gautam.
Upon receiving the complaint, the CBI's ACB in Lucknow conducted a verification and compiled a report stating, “The facts presented and the discreet verification suggest a prima facie case of an offense punishable under Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (amended in 2018) against G.S. Gautam, Inspector, RPF, Akbarpur, UP, along with unknown others.”
