New Delhi, June 30 (NationPress) India has achieved significant advancements in broadening its social security framework, with over 25 crore individuals escaping poverty in recent times, stated Dr. Ranjit Mehta, CEO and Secretary General of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI) on Monday.

Dr. Mehta's comments follow the International Labour Organisation (ILO) recognizing India as the second-best globally regarding social security coverage.

In the last decade, the nation has substantially enhanced its social safety net, increasing coverage from 19 percent to 64.3 percent of the population.

In an interview with IANS, Mehta attributed this success to various social welfare initiatives launched by the Central government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“PM Modi has lived through struggles in his early years, and that background has influenced the government's dedication to assisting the underprivileged,” he remarked.

“From the historic ramparts of the Red Fort during his inaugural Independence Day address, he unveiled the Swachh Bharat Mission and the program to provide free toilets to each household,” Mehta shared with IANS.

He emphasized key government programs, highlighting that the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is crucially focused on fulfilling the essential requirement for housing, aiming to guarantee that every Indian has a secure roof over their head.

“Even amid the Covid-19 crisis, very few people in India faced hunger, owing to the free ration initiative. From the Ujjwala scheme for clean cooking fuel to financial aid for farmers and pension plans, these programs have delivered tangible and significant advantages to millions,” he continued.

Referring to the Ayushman Bharat health insurance initiative, Mehta noted that such initiatives serve as a vital safety net.

“Under Ayushman Bharat, individuals can access free medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh. Even the most impoverished can enter a hospital and receive treatment without the fear of costs,” he explained.

He provided an example, stating that if the primary earner in a household becomes ill, it can jeopardize the family’s stability.

During such circumstances, government programs like Ayushman Bharat are essential in preventing families from reverting to poverty.
