New Delhi, Oct 8 (NationPress) The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has initiated a corruption inquiry against Dr Prithvi Krishna Patta, the Medical Superintendent of the Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) Dispensary located at Coal Estate, Civil Lines, Nagpur, and Kamlesh N. Lalwani, owner of M/s Sadguru Medical Stores, due to their suspected participation in a fraudulent medical billing operation.
As per the FIR, it is alleged that Dr Patta and Lalwani conspired to create and submit deceptive medical bills to the WCL Headquarters in Nagpur.
The CBI claims that the medical officer fabricated false and inflated prescriptions, which were then utilized by the private chemist to request reimbursements from WCL for medications that were either overpriced or not dispensed at all.
Investigators further assert that Dr Patta altered prescriptions post-issuance by adding expensive medications without the patients' consent, facilitating the private pharmacy in generating inflated invoices.
These counterfeit documents were subsequently sent to WCL’s headquarters, resulting in payments based on these fraudulent claims.
“On the basis of these forged documents, inflated bills were presented and compensated to the private Medical Stores by WCL Headquarters, Nagpur,” stated the CBI in a press release.
The CBI reported that searches were conducted at several locations associated with both suspects, including the WCL dispensary and the premises of the medical store.
“Multiple locations have been searched, and an investigation is underway to uncover the scam within the medical services linked to WCL,” it mentioned.
Both suspects, Dr Prithvi Krishna Patta and Kamlesh N. Lalwani, have been detained and are expected to be interrogated to identify other potential officials or suppliers who may be implicated in the alleged fraud.
The CBI's investigation continues to evaluate the extent of financial damage inflicted on the public sector company and to identify any additional beneficiaries.
