CEC Gyanesh Kumar Stays Silent on Opposition's Move to Remove Him
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 15 (NationPress) Committed to ensuring transparent and inducement-free Assembly elections, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, on Sunday, sidestepped questions regarding a reported initiative by the Opposition to pursue his removal in Parliament.
When queried about claims of partiality against the Election Commission of India (ECI) by various political factions, the CEC remarked, "The Commission prefers to avoid such discussions."
During the announcement of the election schedule for four states and one Union Territory (UT), CEC Kumar outlined the measures implemented by the electoral body to guarantee free, fair, and transparent Assembly elections.
"Elections in India are conducted according to the Constitution and legal frameworks. Any form of political violence or inducement will not be accepted," the CEC stated.
His comments coincided with an attack by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the ECI and her ongoing sit-in protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) at Esplanade in Kolkata, which commenced on February 6.
Previously, Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy confirmed on Friday that notices have been filed in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, which have been executed legally to initiate proceedings for the removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.
He noted that the next step involves forming a committee to investigate the issue.
Speaking to journalists on Parliament grounds, Roy emphasized that the initiation of action against the CEC adheres to constitutional guidelines and established legal protocols.
"The committee will be constituted as mandated by law. What do we hope for? Our notice complies with the legal framework, and a committee should be established. The primary accusation is that he has disenfranchised citizens, with numerous names being excluded from the voter list. This is entirely incorrect. Additionally, several booth-level officers have tragically lost their lives," remarked the Trinamool Congress MP.
On Sunday, the CEC announced that "Assam and Keralam will participate in a single voting phase on April 9. The UT of Puducherry will also hold elections on April 9. In Tamil Nadu, all 234 Assembly constituencies will vote in a single phase on April 23."
"For the 294-member West Bengal Assembly, polling will occur in two phases. 152 Assembly seats will vote on April 23, while the remaining 142 seats will have elections on April 29," he added.
The results for all states and the sole Union Territory will be revealed on May 4.
