Chandigarh, Jan 6 (NationPress) Congress MP Deepender Hooda stated on Tuesday that the Central government is undermining Haryana’s interests and the state government is remaining silent.
He expressed concerns that both the Centre and the state BJP government are completely disregarding and neglecting Haryana's rights. He urged that Haryana be named as the host or co-host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics as announced by the Government of India.
“We have resolved to not stay silent; we will advocate for Haryana's rights from Parliament to the streets,” Deepender declared to the media in Chandigarh.
Accompanied by over two dozen MLAs and four MPs, the Congress MP leveled accusations against the Centre. He highlighted that Haryana, which contributes 50 percent of the medals to India in the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and Olympics, has been overlooked.
“In the last four Olympics, Haryana athletes secured more than half of the total medals for the nation. In the recent Olympics, around 25 percent of the athletes hailed from Haryana. We take pride in the fact that since 2006, Haryana has accounted for 50 percent of the medals and 25 percent of the athletes across all Games, including the Olympics,” he remarked.
“Nevertheless, when our nation was awarded the chance to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the BJP government at the Centre chose not to select Haryana as the host state. Instead, Gujarat was picked. Substantial investments will now flow into Ahmedabad for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, facilitating the construction of sports infrastructure. Had this same investment been allocated to Haryana, lakhs of crores would have been infused here,” he noted.
He emphasized that each state in India possesses its unique characteristics, achievements, and strengths, and the Indian government ought to base its decisions on these attributes. “In the realm of sports, Haryana's athletes have consistently excelled in bringing honor to the nation.” Addressing the significant injustice towards Haryana residents in terms of financial allocations, he pointed out that Haryana boasts the highest GST collection in the country and also leads in toll collection.
“Nonetheless, Haryana receives the lowest budget allocation nationwide. The central government collects a total of 7.10 percent of GST from Haryana, yet in return, Haryana only receives 1.009 percent, the lowest in the country,” he stated.
“This indicates that the Central government collects Rs 7 from Haryana while returning merely Re 1. When MP Varun Mulana raised a question in Parliament regarding MNREGA initiatives, the response revealed alarming information: over 8 lakh MNREGA workers are registered and active in Haryana, yet in 2024-25, only 2,191 families received 100 days of work,” he emphasized.
“The stipulations of the new Act have jeopardized the very existence of MNREGA. To safeguard the rights of MNREGA workers and to fight for their entitlements, we are taking this struggle to the streets, reaching out to every worker,” MP Hooda concluded.
