Mysuru (Karnataka), Aug 30 (NationPress) In response to Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and state unit Congress President D.K. Shivakumar's assertion that Chamundi Hills is not solely for Hindus, Pramoda Devi Wadiyar of the former Mysuru royal family asserted that Chamundi Hills indeed belongs to Hindus.

She urged an end to the politicization of Dussehra celebrations.

During a press conference in Mysuru on Saturday, Pramoda Devi emphasized that the rituals and worship at Chamundi Temple are performed strictly according to Hindu customs.

"The Chamundi Temple is conducted under Hindu traditions," she stated.

"The Goddess Chamundi is a revered Hindu deity, especially honored by those from the Yadu lineage. For members of this lineage, Goddess Chamundeshwari holds a maternal significance," Pramoda Devi added.

She further remarked, "Let politicians express their views. Their statements will not alter the truth. The legal dispute regarding the Chamundi Temple is ongoing in court. Though a government authority has been established, it is not yet formalized. Clarity will emerge once the court reaches a decision."

"This matter has been in litigation for 70 years. It pains me to see the temple exploited for political gain," she expressed.

Regarding the invitation to Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq to inaugurate the Dussehra festivities, Pramoda Devi commented: "I have no personal stance on this issue. Only those who extended the invitation and the invitee understand the reasoning behind it. There has been ample politics surrounding Dussehra, and it should cease now."

She added: "The government's Dussehra celebration does not reflect our traditional heritage. Our family observes Dussehra in a private manner. The government organizes its festivities in accordance with its own plans. As our family is responsible for the Ambari, a family member participates in the ceremony."

This statement was prompted by Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar's response to the BJP's objections regarding the selection of Booker Prize laureate Banu Mushtaq for the Dussehra inauguration. Shivakumar had claimed that Chamundi Hills is not exclusive to Hindus.

Pramoda Devi Wadiyar had previously labeled Shivakumar's remarks as "insensitive" and "unwarranted."

"I express my deep concern over how this year's Dasara celebrations proposed by the Government of Karnataka have unfolded, particularly with politics intruding upon the sacred Chamundeshwari temple atop Chamundi Hills," she stated in her letter.

Point of View

It is crucial to recognize the deep cultural and religious sentiments tied to Chamundi Hills. The ongoing discourse reflects broader societal tensions, and while political opinions may differ, it's essential to honor the traditions held dear by many. This dialogue should foster understanding rather than division.
