Nilambur (Kerala), June 4 (NationPress) - Chandy Oommen, the newly elected Congress legislator from Kerala, expressed deep emotions during his campaign supporting party candidate Aryadan Shoukath for the upcoming June 19 Nilambur assembly bypoll. The campaign ignited heartfelt memories of his father, the late two-time Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.
"I feel a wave of emotions when I engage with voters asking for support for Shoukath. The affection they show me grows as they recognize me as the son of their beloved leader, Oommen Chandy, and they share nothing but positive memories about my father," stated Oommen.
He further emphasized, "Everyone recalls the close bond shared between my father and Aryadan Mohammed, Shoukath’s father, and many express these fond memories during our conversations." Mohammed, a towering figure in local politics, achieved victory in a record eight elections from Nilambur between 1965 and 2011. He stepped back from politics prior to the 2016 elections and passed away in 2022.
Both Chandy and Mohammed were pivotal in shaping the faction of Congress led by A.K. Antony during a tumultuous period when the party was split between Antony and K. Karunakaran for nearly thirty years. During Chandy's tenures as Chief Minister, Mohammed served in his cabinet.
As part of his campaign, Oommen is personally visiting every household, demonstrating Congress's commitment to reclaiming this constituency after a gap of nine years.
The bypoll was prompted by the resignation of two-time Left-backed Independent legislator P.V. Anvar in January, following significant disagreements with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
Anvar's political journey took a turn after initially showing support for Congress, only to shift his stance when the party chose Shoukath, whom he had previously defeated in 2016. He ultimately filed nominations as both an Independent and a Trinamool Congress candidate, although the latter was rejected.
Other candidates include the CPI-M's M. Swaraj and Mohan George from the BJP.
Chandy Oommen marked his political debut in 2023, winning a significant victory from his father's constituency, Puthupally. His father held this seat from 1970 until his passing in 2023.
