Thiruvananthapuram, June 27 (NationPress) Shortly after taking the oath as the new representative from Kerala's Nilambur Assembly constituency, Aryadan Shoukath expressed his desire to mirror the accomplishments of his father, the esteemed Congress figure Aryadan Mohammed.
"I aspire to operate like my father, as I have witnessed his substantial contributions to the community," Shoukath remarked.
Feeling emotional, he acknowledged that he profoundly misses his father when reflecting on his victory in this second election attempt. In 2016, he lost to the Left-backed Independent P.V.Anvar, during which his father was still alive.
Aryadan Mohammed passed away in 2022.
Among those present at the swearing-in ceremony were Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Leader of Opposition V.D.Satheesan, numerous state ministers, legislators, and a large turnout of voters from Shoukath's constituency, including family members.
With Shoukath's win, the Congress-led UDF's count reached 42 in the 140-seat Kerala Assembly, while the Left's representation decreased to 98.
Shoukath won against former CPI-M member M.Swaraj by a margin exceeding 11,077 votes, with the vote counting happening on Monday. Aryadan had previously contested eight times in this constituency but faced defeat in three elections from 1965 to 2011.
Anvar, who first won in 2016 against Shoukath, repeated his victory in the 2021 elections, but left his position in January this year due to significant disagreements with Vijayan, leading to the by-election.
During the polls, Anvar, who had a fallout with the Congress leadership after Shoukath was nominated, contested as an independent and finished third, stunning many by garnering over 19,000 votes.
Shoukath's victory has unsettled the Vijayan-led Left camp, which had anticipated that Swaraj would secure the by-election, establishing groundwork for a third consecutive Vijayan government in the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections.
This success has sparked enthusiasm within the Congress-led UDF, as Satheesan has consistently stated that this victory was achieved due to the "Team UDF's dedicated and organized campaign."
