Thiruvananthapuram, May 26 (NationPress) The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has announced its decision to nominate Aryadan Shoukath, aged 59, as the candidate for the upcoming Nilambur Assembly by-election, which is set to take place on June 19.

This bypoll became necessary following the resignation of P.V. Anvar, a two-time MLA and a Left-aligned Independent, due to a fallout with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

The KPCC leadership has submitted only Shoukath’s name to the All India Congress Committee (AICC), which is anticipated to make the official declaration shortly.

Shoukath is the son of the late Aryadan Mohammed, a prominent figure in the Congress party in Kerala and a long-serving Minister who represented Nilambur for an impressive eight terms until his retirement in 2016. Aryadan Mohammed passed away in 2022.

In the 2016 Assembly elections, Shoukath, affectionately known as 'Babutty', contested from Nilambur but lost to Anvar by a margin of 11,504 votes. Anvar secured victory again in 2021, albeit with a significantly reduced margin of around 2,700 votes.

Shoukath's candidacy arises amidst rumors that Anvar is exploring a return to the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) after parting ways with the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF).

He is reportedly engaging in discussions with leaders from the IUML, the UDF's second-largest ally. Political analysts believe his next steps could significantly influence the outcome of the bypoll.

To maintain internal harmony, the KPCC leadership consulted with other potential candidates, including Malappuram DCC president V.S. Joy, who has expressed his full support for Shoukath after discussions with senior party officials.

Since the announcement of the bypoll date, Shoukath’s residence has been bustling with a constant influx of visitors and supporters.

Speaking to journalists, he remarked, “Let the official confirmation come. Until then, I’ll continue preparing.”

On Tuesday, Shoukath is expected to visit Thiruvananthapuram to meet A.K. Antony, former Defence Minister and a close confidant of his late father. He will also visit Puthuppally in Kottayam to pay his respects at the grave of Oommen Chandy, a former Chief Minister and mentor to Shoukath’s father.

His formal campaign launch is set for Wednesday.

Aryadan Shoukath is not only a politician but also a well-respected film producer and screenwriter, recognized for his socially relevant narratives.

His film 'Paadam Onnu: Oru Vilapam', released in 2003, received the National Film Award for Best Film on Family Welfare, establishing him as a socially aware storyteller in Malayalam cinema.

As the political landscape evolves, all eyes are on P.V. Anvar’s next move, which could decisively impact the by-election and broader political dynamics in Malappuram.
