Mumbai, Oct 17 (NationPress) The region of Gadchiroli in Maharashtra, which was previously known for intense Maoist activities, is experiencing a significant transformation. Over the last five years, more than 70 Maoists have surrendered, collectively valued at Rs 2.8 crores.
The main driving force behind this return seems to be a growing disillusionment with Maoist ideologies.
Charbhatti village, once a bastion of Naxalite presence, has now emerged as a completely Naxal-free zone. Unlike in the past, the Maoists no longer dominate this area, and residents are now living freely without the cloud of fear.
According to local elders, the Maoists' grip was strongest from 2002 to 2005. For any public gatherings or activities, prior approval from them was mandatory, but that is no longer the case.
“Whether it was a small event or a development initiative, everything was dictated by their whims. During that time, Suresh, the village's divisional commander, was a household name,” shared a local.
“Since Suresh's surrender, Naxalite influence has diminished significantly. Today, Charbhatti village stands entirely Naxal-free,” noted another villager.
Reflecting on the darker days, locals recounted, “Infrastructure projects like roads, drains, and schools were constantly obstructed. Any progress was halted by threats from Naxalites.”
However, over time, their ideology faltered as they unjustly punished innocent villagers for trivial offenses. This led to growing resentment among the people.
One villager explained that attempts to impose an alcohol ban were made through intimidation, which ultimately failed.
“Now, under the leadership of the Tanta Mukt Samiti, our village has achieved a 100% alcohol-free status. The difference lies in the fact that decisions are now made collaboratively and without fear,” villagers shared.
Another resident added, “Currently, Naxalism has no hold over Charbhatti village. People are empowered to make their own choices.”
Just yesterday, 61 senior Naxal cadres surrendered to the Gadchiroli police, in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This group included a Polit Bureau member of the Central Naxal committee, Mallujola Venugopal Rao alias Bhupati, with a combined bounty of Rs 6 crore, featuring several senior committee members.
