Is Maoist Cadre Abhijeet Koda Charged in the 2024 Jharkhand Attack?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ranchi, Sep 27 (NationPress) The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has officially filed a chargesheet against a significant suspect in the 2024 incident involving an assault by CPI (Maoist) militants on security personnel in Jharkhand, as confirmed by officials on Saturday.
The suspect, known as Abhijeet Koda (also referred to as Sunil Koda, Matla Koda, and Matlu), hails from the Jamui district of Bihar and faces charges under various laws, including the Indian Penal Code, the Arms Act, the Explosive Substances Act, the Criminal Law Amendment Act of 1908, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of 1967.
This chargesheet has been presented to the NIA Special Court located in Ranchi, Jharkhand.
As per the NIA, Koda is an armed member of the CPI (Maoist) and was involved in a broader scheme orchestrated by the outlawed organization aimed at executing terrorist activities and enhancing its network in collaboration with other affiliates.
Investigative efforts have uncovered that he acted as a courier and messenger for senior Maoist leaders, actively contributing to their growth strategies and illicit operations.
This case traces back to February 2024, when the Jharkhand Police, in conjunction with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), initiated a search operation in the Sundari Pahari forest region of Chatro-Chatti in Bokaro district.
Intelligence reports had suggested the presence of 15-20 armed Naxalite cadres in the area, allegedly planning to engage in criminal acts, recruit local youth, impose levies, and launch assaults on security forces, according to officials.
During the operation, the Maoists opened fire indiscriminately on the security personnel, leading to a counterattack.
Although the militants managed to evade capture, the security forces recovered critical items from the site, including a laptop with its charger, a pen drive, a wireless handset, an FM receiver radio, a list of phone numbers, Naxalite literature, pencil batteries, a portable scanner, both live and spent cartridges, gunpowder, pellets, and a striker.
The NIA assumed control of the investigation in June 2024 and has been diligently pursuing the case since.
Officials have stated that inquiries into the broader conspiracy and network of the Maoist organization are still ongoing.
