Chennai, Oct 22 (NationPress) As the northeast monsoon unleashes heavy rains on the region, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has implemented a detailed flood-mitigation strategy aimed at safeguarding both its active network and construction sites.
This initiative is designed to avert waterlogging at vital metro stations and protect costly tunneling equipment utilized for the Phase-2 expansion.
According to officials at CMRL, key stations in Phase-1 and its extension, including Government Estate, Saidapet, Teynampet, St. Thomas Mount, Koyambedu, Arumbakkam, Tiruvottiyur, and Toll Gate, have been prioritized for upgraded flood protection.
To combat potential flooding, over 1,000 gunny bags, 300 cement blocks, and 20 fifty-kilogram cement bags have already been positioned at these sites.
T. Archunan, Director (Projects) at CMRL, mentioned that the agency has divided its flood-preparedness efforts into four categories: operational stations, under-construction sites, vulnerable areas like OMR and Porur junction, and collaboration with departments such as the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).
“Our approach aims to manage flooding across all site categories. Operational stations are equipped with necessary materials, while construction sites are being fortified with retaining walls and pumping systems. Coordination with GCC ensures a swift response in case of urban flooding,” he stated.
Currently, tunneling operations utilizing Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) and work on the retrieval and launch shafts are underway at various underground sites.
Heavy-duty pumps have been deployed to prevent water ingress that could harm machinery and lead to substantial financial losses.
Additionally, CMRL has placed 603 water pumps of different capacities across its Phase-2 corridors to monitor and dewater affected areas continuously.
This deployment spans three major corridors: Corridor-3: Madhavaram Milk Colony to Siruseri-SIPCOT; Corridor-4: Lighthouse to Poonamallee Depot; Corridor-5: Madhavaram Milk Colony to Sholinganallur.
Officials noted that the Metro’s flood-response units are on constant alert, collaborating closely with civic agencies to ensure uninterrupted operations, even amid intense downpours.
