Chennai, Oct 22 (NationPress) As the northeast monsoon strengthens and continuous rainfall impacts the city, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has instructed all departments to enhance their preventive and relief strategies to manage imminent flooding and other emergencies throughout Chennai.
In response to the Chief Minister's directives, Chennai Police Commissioner M. Arun has initiated extensive safety and rescue operations in areas most at risk.
Under his guidance, 12 specialized rescue teams have been established, each led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police, to ensure immediate response across the metropolis.
As per police reports, these rescue teams consist of trained swimmers, members from the National and State Disaster Response Forces, and local volunteers familiar with flood relief efforts.
The teams are strategically positioned to ensure quick deployment in the event of waterlogging, road obstructions, or emergency evacuations. Additionally, the city police have created 39 dedicated control rooms to manage distress calls and facilitate emergency aid.
Of these, 23 “mini control rooms” have been set up in South Chennai alone, where numerous low-lying areas are at risk of flooding.
Dr. Kannan, Additional Commissioner of Police (South Chennai), stated that citizens in need can reach out to the police emergency helpline number 100 for prompt assistance.
“Upon receiving a call, our rescue teams will promptly arrive at the affected location. We are fully prepared to tackle rain-related emergencies,” he reassured.
Senior officials from the Police Commissioner’s office confirmed ongoing coordination with the Greater Chennai Corporation, Fire and Rescue Services, and disaster management teams on a 24-hour basis.
“All required personnel, equipment, and vehicles are on standby. Chennai Police are entirely equipped to manage the challenges induced by the heavy monsoon,” remarked a senior officer.
With forecasts indicating further rainfall in the coming 48 hours, authorities have urged residents to steer clear of waterlogged areas and adhere closely to official guidance.
The city remains vigilant, with emergency teams conducting a 24-hour watch to protect lives and property.
