Chennai, Oct 22 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin carried out an unexpected inspection of flood relief centres and ongoing rainwater drainage initiatives in Chennai on Wednesday, as persistent rain continued to batter the city due to the northeast monsoon.

As per an official announcement, Udhayanidhi commenced his visit at the community welfare centre located on Venkatrangam Street in the Chepauk-Triplicane constituency, where a central kitchen and temporary relief shelter have been established for residents impacted by flooding in low-lying regions.

He evaluated the amenities available at the centre, encompassing food distribution, medical aid, sanitation, and the provision of drinking water.

The Deputy Chief Minister subsequently examined the central kitchen in Chinthadripet, where meals are being prepared and dispatched to various relief centres throughout the city.

He engaged with the staff and volunteers involved in the preparation and distribution activities, commending their dedication to ensure a steady food supply for those displaced by the deluge.

Afterward, Udhayanidhi inspected the temporary relief camp set up at the Chennai Higher Secondary School on West Cooum Road.

He assessed the accommodations for families residing there, including sleeping arrangements, medical support, and power backup.

Later, the Deputy Chief Minister visited the ongoing rainwater drainage construction work at the bustling intersection of Anna Salai and GP Road. He reviewed the advancements in desilting and drainage enhancement efforts aimed at preventing water accumulation in key areas of the city.

During his assessment visits, Udhayanidhi Stalin underscored the significance of providing consistent support and essential services to the public in light of the forecast of heavy rainfall in the forthcoming days.

He instructed officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation and the Public Works Department to ensure the implementation of all precautionary measures and urged them to work tirelessly to alleviate the challenges faced by residents.

The Deputy CM reaffirmed that the state government is fully equipped to address the northeast monsoon and that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is closely monitoring the situation. “Every official must stay vigilant and act promptly to protect the populace,” he conveyed to reporters during the visit.
