Chennai, Oct 19 (NationPress) The President of the Tamil Nadu BJP, Nainar Nagendran, has urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to travel to the Theni district and implement urgent measures to support the residents suffering from the devastating floods that have impacted the area.
He called on the state administration to set up relief camps and prioritize the safety of individuals in the flooded regions.
In a statement, Nagendran referred to the situation in Theni as "heart-wrenching", pointing out that one of the most scenic districts in Tamil Nadu is currently grappling with significant flooding.
He claimed that although heavy rainfall is cited as the cause, the real issue stems from what he describes as a "man-made disaster" attributed to the DMK government.
Nagendran asserted that had the state’s Water Resources Department performed necessary desilting of canals and maintained reservoirs prior to the northeast monsoon, such calamities could have been prevented.
"Despite clear monsoon forecasts, there was no preparedness, no early warning for residents, and no preventive measures to protect them," he stated.
He raised concerns regarding the unexpected surge of water from the Mullaiperiyar dam, noting that only 1,000 cusecs of water was released four days prior, while on Saturday evening, the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department abruptly increased the outflow to 7,163 cusecs.
"This sudden release raises questions about whether the flooding was exacerbated by administrative mismanagement," he remarked.
Nagendran criticized the DMK government for "gross negligence" that has resulted in countless individuals losing their homes, livestock, and agricultural land overnight.
"The so-called model government is moving at a snail's pace in rescue operations," he added, emphasizing that the administration’s response lacked the urgency needed amid rising human suffering.
The state BJP President demanded that Chief Minister Stalin visit Theni immediately to supervise relief efforts.
"Relief camps need to be established to accommodate affected individuals, rescue operations must be ramped up, and emergency compensation should be delivered without delay," Nagendran insisted, stressing that the state government must act promptly to restore normalcy in the flood-stricken district.
