Chennai, March 23 (NationPress) The Greater Chennai Police have intensified their efforts to combat history-sheeters throughout the city in light of a double homicide that occurred in Kotturpuram on March 16.

The incident involved the brutal killings of two infamous criminals -- Arun Kumar (25) and his accomplice, Padappai Suresh (25). Both were viciously attacked late on Sunday night. Following rapid police action, 14 individuals were apprehended, including the primary suspect, ‘Sukku Kappi’ Suresh (26), shortly after the incident.

Amid escalating public anxiety and political criticism concerning the deteriorating law enforcement situation, Chennai Police Commissioner A. Arun has instructed officials to enhance their initiatives to capture absconding history-sheeters.

The opposition parties, AIADMK and BJP, have criticized the ruling DMK government for its perceived inability to control the surge in criminal activities. Despite ongoing operations, police statistics indicate a concerning increase in the number of history-sheeters connected to multiple murders. Authorities state that more thorough strategies are being implemented to monitor and apprehend these individuals.

This current operation is reminiscent of a vigorous initiative launched soon after the murder of BSP state president K. Armstrong on July 5, 2024. Since that incident, over 153 anti-social elements have been detained under the Goonda Act, approximately 375 rowdies have been arrested, and two have been fatally shot during police operations.

Senior police officials have confirmed that a new roster of anti-socials has been compiled, focusing particularly on those categorized as “A-Plus” rowdies -- those implicated in more than two murders.

Of the 60 identified A-Plus rowdies in the city, 33 are from North Chennai. Specifically, the Washermenpet police district accounts for 20, while Pulianthope has 12, and one is listed under the Flower Bazaar police district.

The city police maintain history sheets on individuals with repeated offenses involving assault and serious injury. As the severity and frequency of their crimes escalate -- particularly with involvement in murder and attempted murder -- their ratings progress from ‘B’ to ‘A’ and subsequently to ‘A-Plus’.

As the crackdown intensifies, many criminals have gone into hiding. Among them is Sambhav Senthil, a principal suspect in the K. Armstrong case, who has been evading capture since July 5.

Senthil, classified as an A-Plus history sheeter under the Washermenpet police station, is wanted in multiple murder cases. His associates, Krishna Kumar and Appu, are also on the run.

Sources within the Chennai Police indicate they have reliable leads on Senthil’s location and are optimistic about apprehending him soon. This murder case has unveiled a troubling link between criminals and political figures, implicating members of the AIADMK, Tamil Maanila Congress, BJP, and Congress. A comprehensive 5,000-page charge sheet has been presented to the magistrate court.

“We will not cease our campaign against anti-social elements. The crackdown will persist,” declared a senior officer from North Chennai. Commissioner A. Arun has reaffirmed the department’s dedication to reinstating law and order, vowing continuous efforts to combat rowdyism in the city.
