Chennai Police Shoots and Captures Notorious Criminal

Chennai, Dec 9 (NationPress) The Greater Chennai Police discharged their firearms and took into custody a notorious criminal who was actively avoiding arrest.
A police unit, under the leadership of Sub-Inspector Premkumar, sought to apprehend Arivazhagan alias Hari (24) from Thirumullaivoyal, who has an extensive history of criminal activities.
On Monday, as law enforcement closed in, Arivazhagan brandished a country-made pistol and attempted to open fire at the officers.
In self-defense, Sub-Inspector Premkumar shot him below the knee, incapacitating him.
Following his arrest, Arivazhagan was taken to Government Stanley Medical College for medical treatment.
A senior police official classified Arivazhagan as an “A” category history-sheeter.
He had been hiding in a housing area at Pananthope Railway Colony in Ayanavaram.
Authorities reported that he was allegedly involved in at least six serious crimes, including murder and attempted murder, across Chennai and Tiruvallur districts.
He has outstanding murder charges at the Sembium and Pulianthope police stations in Greater Chennai, along with another murder case and an attempted murder case at the Sholavaram police station.
Moreover, he is implicated in a ganja-peddling charge in Minjur and another attempted murder charge in Thiruthani.
A trial court had issued a non-bailable warrant against him after he failed to appear for a criminal case initiated by the Chennai City Police.
A specialized team led by Otteri Sub-Inspectors Premkumar and Venkateshwaran was assembled to locate him.
The fugitive had been on the run for the last couple of years, prompting the police team to travel to Bihar and Andhra Pradesh in an effort to find him.
He reportedly returned to Chennai, fearing retribution from associates of a history-sheeter whose murder he was allegedly connected to.
On Sunday, the special team successfully tracked him to his hideout in Chennai.
During the arrest, officers seized a country-made pistol, a knife, and 6 kilograms of ganja.
This incident is one of several involving police encounters since M. Arun assumed the role of Greater Chennai City Police Commissioner.
After the murder of BSP State President K. Armstrong on July 5, 2024, three dangerous criminals were killed by the city police in purported encounters.
On July 14, 2024, police shot dead K. Thiruvengadam, a key suspect in Armstrong’s killing.
Authorities stated that Thiruvengadam attacked officers when taken to Madhavaram Lake to identify weapons used in the crime, necessitating a defensive response.
Another gangster, Kakathope Balaji, was shot dead on September 18 after allegedly attacking police while hiding in Vyasarpadi.
Balaji had a staggering 64 criminal cases against him, including murder.
Similarly, on September 23, the notorious gangster “Seizing” Raja was killed after attacking police officers during an investigation following his arrest in Andhra Pradesh.
Commissioner M. Arun previously indicated that the police may need to adopt tactics that “gangsters understand” to uphold law and order.
