Chennai: Arrest of Notorious Criminal History-Sheeter

Chennai, Dec 9 (NationPress) The Greater Chennai Police successfully apprehended a history-sheeter who had been evading capture.

A police unit, under the direction of Sub-Inspector Premkumar, sought to detain Arivazhagan alias Hari (24) from Thirumullaivoyal, who has multiple criminal cases filed against him.

On Monday, as the officers closed in, Arivazhagan brandished a country-made pistol and attempted to fire upon them.

In retaliation, Sub-Inspector Premkumar shot him below the knee, incapacitating him.

Arivazhagan was then taken into custody and transported to Government Stanley Medical College for medical treatment.

A senior police official classified Arivazhagan as an “A” category history-sheeter.

He had been hiding in a residential area at Pananthope Railway Colony, Ayanavaram.

Authorities indicated he was allegedly connected to at least six criminal offenses, including murder and attempted murder, across Chennai and Tiruvallur districts.

There are pending murder cases against him at the Sembium and Pulianthope police precincts in Greater Chennai City, as well as another murder case and an attempted murder case at the Sholavaram police station.

Furthermore, he is implicated in a ganja-peddling case in Minjur and another attempted murder case in Thiruthani.

A trial court had issued a non-bailable warrant for his arrest after he failed to show up in connection with a criminal case filed by the Chennai City Police.

A specialized team, led by Otteri Sub-Inspectors Premkumar and Venkateshwaran, was organized to capture him.

The suspect had been eluding capture for the past few years, prompting the police to travel to Bihar and Andhra Pradesh in search of him.

He reportedly returned to Chennai, fearing retaliation from associates of a history-sheeter whose murder he was allegedly implicated in.

On Sunday, the dedicated team managed to locate his hideout in Chennai.

During the arrest, police confiscated a country-made pistol, a knife, and 6 kilograms of ganja.

This incident is one of several encounters that have occurred since M. Arun assumed office as the Commissioner of Greater Chennai City Police.

Following the murder of BSP State President K. Armstrong on July 5, 2024, three notorious criminals were shot dead by city police in alleged encounters.

On July 14, 2024, police shot and killed K. Thiruvengadam, a key suspect in Armstrong’s murder.

According to police reports, Thiruvengadam attacked officers while being brought to Madhavaram Lake to identify weapons used in the crime, forcing them to fire in self-defense.

Another gangster, Kakathope Balaji, was killed on September 18 after allegedly attacking police while hiding in Vyasarpadi.

Balaji had a staggering 64 criminal cases against him, including murder.

Similarly, on September 23, notorious gangster “seizing” Raja was shot dead.

Raja had been arrested in Andhra Pradesh and was brought to Chennai, where he reportedly attacked police when his handcuffs were removed during questioning.

Commissioner M. Arun has previously indicated that police may need to employ tactics that “gangsters understand” to uphold law and order.
