Chennai, Nov 22 (NationPress) A dramatic police operation took place near the Indira Nagar MRTS railway station in Chennai early on Saturday, culminating in the arrest of a 21-year-old history-sheeter linked to the brutal murder of another rowdy. The suspect, Vijayakumar from Vishalakshi Thottam in Abiramapuram, was shot in the leg after he allegedly attacked a police constable and tried to flee.
A special team led by Mylapore Inspector Ambedkar had been monitoring Vijayakumar as part of the investigation into the murder of Mouli, a 24-year-old resident of the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board quarters on Subbarayan Street.
Mouli, classified as a 'C category rowdy', had over four criminal cases pending against him. He was fatally attacked on Thursday night by a six-member gang on bikes in Mandaveli.
Following a tip-off, police approached Vijayakumar near the MRTS station in the early hours. When surrounded, he reportedly drew a knife and assaulted Constable Tamilarasan. Ignoring multiple warnings, he attempted to escape, which led Inspector Ambedkar to shoot him in the leg to stop his flight.
Vijayakumar was first taken to Government Royapettah Hospital and later moved to the prisoners' ward at Government Stanley Hospital. According to police reports, he has eight criminal cases pending against him. In addition, two accomplices, Gautham and Niranjan, were apprehended from a hideout for their suspected involvement in Mouli's murder.
Investigators suspect that the trio played a significant role in the crime's conspiracy and execution, stemming from a long-standing feud between Vijayakumar and Mouli, who had been acquainted for years.
Despite Mouli relocating to Red Hills, he frequently visited his former neighborhood, often clashing with local groups. Reports indicate that Vijayakumar was incensed by Mouli's friendship with his elder sister on social media, further escalating tensions in recent weeks.
With three suspects now in custody, authorities are concentrating on uncovering the broader network involved in the murder and identifying the remaining gang members responsible for the Mandaveli attack.
