Will Greater Chennai Police Enhance Safety with Smart Surveillance?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Nov 2 (NationPress) In a significant advancement in enhancing public safety and surveillance, the Greater Chennai Police is set to deploy closed-circuit television (CCTV) and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras at 45 crucial sites throughout north Chennai, as announced on Sunday.
This initiative is designed to tackle vehicle thefts, oversee traffic infringements, and bolster law enforcement in areas prone to crime and heavy traffic.
The project, part of the North Chennai Development Plan, is estimated to cost Rs 9.16 crore.
The cameras will be strategically located in neighborhoods such as Vyasarpadi, Pulianthope, Flower Bazaar, Washermenpet, Basin Bridge, North Beach, Esplanade, Thiruvottiyur, and Sembium.
Officials have indicated that 10 cameras will be placed in Flower Bazaar, 18 in Pulianthope, and 17 in Washermenpet, all of which are identified as sensitive zones due to high traffic volumes and commercial activity.
The surveillance network will encompass major intersections, marketplace areas, bus stops, temples, and railway stations, all vulnerable to theft, chain-snatching, and illegal parking.
Notable locations targeted include Muthusamy Road–Esplanade Road, Anna Salai–Pallavan Salai, Starhans Road, Erukanchery High Road–Ethiraj Samy Salai, Ennore High Road signal, and the bustling Kasimedu fish market area.
The cameras will connect to a sophisticated Intelligent Video Management System (IVMS) designed to identify stolen vehicles and provide real-time alerts to nearby police stations.
The ANPR cameras will automatically detect traffic violations including signal jumping, riding without helmets, and mobile phone use while driving. Violations will be processed digitally, with e-challans issued via the VAHAN portal.
A senior police official emphasized that all cameras will incorporate night vision technology to enable continuous monitoring.
“Live feeds from the control room will facilitate rapid responses to incidents and serve as critical evidence during investigations,” the official noted.
This project is anticipated to significantly enhance police efficacy in crime detection and deterrence.
By integrating technology into surveillance, the police aspire not only to improve road discipline and decrease thefts but also to reassure residents about safety in the northern regions of the city—a locale that has experienced rapid urban growth and commercial development in recent years.
