Chennai, Oct 28 (NationPress) As the northeast monsoon gains strength across Tamil Nadu, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has enhanced its readiness to mitigate rain-related challenges and prevent disease outbreaks in the city.
To assist residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas, the civic body has set up 215 relief centres throughout Chennai. Each centre is stocked with vital resources including food, sanitation, and clean drinking water.
A system of 106 central kitchens has been established to maintain a steady supply of meals. More than 400,000 residents from at-risk areas have received three meals a day during this period, highlighting the extensive civic response.
To combat seasonal and waterborne diseases during the monsoon, the corporation has organized 574 special medical camps, comprising 408 general health camps and 116 mobile camps, assisting 24,146 individuals. These camps concentrated on fever screening, vector control awareness, and early medical intervention for monsoon-related ailments.
On the infrastructure side, the GCC has prepared over 2,000 motor pumps of different capacities to evacuate rainwater from flooded areas. To manage emergencies caused by strong winds and fallen trees, 457 trained tree surgeons have been deployed.
The civic administration is also keeping 22 essential road tunnels operational around the clock to prevent water accumulation and ensure uninterrupted traffic flow during heavy rainfall. A workforce of 22,000 personnel, including engineers, sanitary workers, and field staff, has been mobilized for flood prevention and relief activities. Furthermore, 2,149 field workers from the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) are prepared to address drainage issues and sewage overflows.
The GCC has encouraged residents to immediately report any rain-related damage, flooding, or emergencies through the toll-free helpline 1913.
Officials have stated that complaints received via social media are also being closely monitored and addressed.
As the city prepares for additional rainfall in the upcoming days, the civic administration’s coordinated efforts—integrating relief operations, public health initiatives, and infrastructure readiness—aim to minimize disruption and protect citizens during the monsoon season.
