Hong Kong, Dec 13 (NationPress) - The South Korean pair of Lim Jong-hoon and Shin Yu-bin triumphed over China's Olympic champions, Wang Chuqin and Sung Yingsha, in a decisive straight game victory during the mixed doubles final at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Finals held on Saturday. Following an injury to Sun during the women's singles competition, the reigning mixed doubles world champions struggled to match their rivals' tempo.
After dropping the first game 11-9, Wang and Sun made a strong comeback, pulling to within 9-8 in the second game. However, the South Korean duo quickly regained their composure, winning the second game 11-8. They maintained their momentum, clinching the third game 11-6 to secure the championship.
Earlier in the day, an ankle injury caused Sun to withdraw from her women's singles semifinal against compatriot Kuai Man.
Kuai took a 2-1 lead after a narrow 12-10 win in the third game, prompting Sun to call for a medical timeout to address her ankle discomfort. After returning, the world No. 1 managed to equalize with an 11-7 victory in the fourth game, as reported by Xinhua.
Unfortunately, Sun's ankle continued to hinder her performance. After losing the fifth game 11-3, she had to withdraw from the match, allowing Kuai to advance to the finals.
"After numerous matches, I felt a lack of strength in my feet in the first game, and the pain worsened in the third," Sun explained. "I hoped to manage it and keep playing. Despite winning the fourth game, I struggled to move in the fifth, particularly with my forehand. I wanted to compete in the mixed doubles final; although the result was disappointing, we gave it our all," she added.
In another women's singles match between two Chinese players, second seed Wang Manyu outplayed Chen Yi with scores of 11-9, 11-3, 12-10, 11-8.
"Knowing each other so well, this match was primarily about making adjustments on the court," Wang remarked post-victory. "I maintained patience throughout the match. Regardless of the score, I adapted and focused on scoring points."
Recovering from a mixed doubles semifinal defeat alongside Kuai, Lin Shidong advanced with a 4-0 victory over Xiang Peng in an all-Chinese men's singles quarterfinal. The second-seeded Lin will face Japan's Tomokazu Harimoto, who narrowly defeated France's Felix Lebrun in a gripping seven-game match.
"I played Harimoto recently. Based on our head-to-head record, I'm not the favorite," Lin acknowledged. "I aim to approach the next match with humility and showcase my capabilities. I'll strive to learn from him," he added.
The other men's semifinal features Wang Chuqin against Sweden's Truls Moregard.
As the concluding tournament of the season, the WTT Finals will wrap up on Sunday, with both men's and women's singles titles still up for grabs.
