Bilaspur, Oct 29 (NationPress) In a significant effort to enhance access to clean energy, the Bilaspur district in Chhattisgarh is gearing up to roll out the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) 3.0 with revised eligibility norms, aiming to furnish free LPG connections to 13,761 economically disadvantaged families.

The initiative was officially inaugurated during a district-level gathering at the Manthan auditorium, presided over by Food Controller Amrit Kujur.

During this meeting, which saw the participation of over 30 gas agency representatives, the focus was on optimizing distribution processes and promoting transparency. Officials were tasked with organizing camps throughout the district for document verification and application processing.

To date, 2.94 lakh families in Bilaspur have benefited from previous iterations of this initiative, originally launched in 2016 to encourage the use of clean cooking fuel among Below Poverty Line (BPL) households.

Under PMUY 3.0, eligible beneficiaries will receive free LPG connections, a stove, and their first refill. However, the scheme now imposes stricter eligibility criteria to ensure that only the most vulnerable families receive support.

Households with a monthly income exceeding Rs 10,000, individuals who pay income or business taxes, government employees, and owners of registered non-agricultural businesses will not qualify.

Moreover, farmers with a Kisan Credit Card limit above Rs 50,000, those owning more than 2.5 acres of irrigated land with equipment, or 5 acres for two crop seasons, or 7.5 acres with irrigation devices, are also disqualified.

Families with living spaces exceeding 30 square meters, those owning motorized vehicles, fishing boats, or mechanized agricultural tools, along with families already possessing LPG connections, will not be eligible.

Food Controller Kujur emphasized that distribution data will be publicly shared in Gram Panchayats and local media to ensure that no eligible family is missed.

He also urged officials to meet the district’s target within the designated timeframe and to hasten application follow-ups.

This initiative is perceived as a crucial step towards women’s empowerment, health security, and environmental sustainability.

With PMUY 3.0, the government seeks to broaden its outreach and ensure that clean fuel becomes a standard in rural India.

Point of View

The implementation of PMUY 3.0 in Bilaspur reflects a vital governmental commitment to addressing energy poverty and enhancing the living standards of economically weaker sections. This initiative is commendable, but the rigorous eligibility criteria may raise concerns about accessibility for those who genuinely need assistance. Ensuring that no eligible family is overlooked will be crucial for the scheme’s success.
