Chinese Consulate Kolkata warns nationals: avoid illegal India entry from Nepal
The Chinese Consulate General in Kolkata has once again cautioned its nationals against crossing into Indian territory without valid travel documents, following the recent arrest of a Chinese national by the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) near the India-Nepal border. The advisory, issued on Monday, 11 May, marks the consulate's second such warning in recent months, underscoring a pattern of Chinese travellers inadvertently — or deliberately — straying across the porous Nepal-India frontier.
What the Advisory Says
In its statement, the consulate reminded Chinese nationals that a valid Indian visa is mandatory before entering India. It highlighted that the Nepal-India border is an open boundary with relatively few physical markers, making accidental crossings a genuine risk — particularly for Chinese nationals travelling in Nepal's border regions.
The consulate warned that India imposes severe penalties on illegal entrants. Regardless of whether the crossing is intentional or accidental, those found to have entered without authorisation face detention, prison sentences of two to eight years, and fines. Bail, the statement noted, is difficult to obtain in such cases.
