Kolkata, July 29 (NationPress) A Chinese national was apprehended near the Indo-Nepal international border close to Siliguri in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal on Tuesday while carrying two Swiss passports under different names.
Early Tuesday morning, personnel from the Border Interaction Team of 'C' Corps of the 41st battalion of Sashastra Seema Bal arrested him as he attempted to illegally cross into Indian territory at the Mechi bridge in the Panitanki area, which borders Nepal.
Sources from the SSB indicated that the individual's body language raised suspicions, prompting the personnel to stop him. After examining his identification documents, they became concerned about his background.
Upon initial questioning and verifying his documents, the officers discovered two Swiss passports bearing different names in his possession.
One passport listed his name as Khamritshang Seten Gurme, while the other identified him as Sengeitsang Karma Jimmy.
Additionally, a counterfeit Nepali citizenship card was found with the detainee. Given the sensitive nature of the situation, the intelligence and security divisions of the SSB interrogated him further and gathered essential information. Subsequently, he was transferred to the local Kharibari police station's custody within the Darjeeling district police.
Darjeeling Superintendent of Police Praveen Prakash confirmed the arrest, stating, “He will be taken into custody for questioning. Investigations are ongoing to determine if others are involved in this case,” he noted.
It is noteworthy that on October 13 of last year, the SSB and West Bengal Police had arrested a Chinese citizen along with an Indian broker at the same location. Earlier in July 2023, another Chinese individual was detained in the same Panitanki area with a fraudulent Nepali identity document.
