Bhubaneswar, June 15 (NationPress) The Odisha Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Mukesh Mahaling, conducted a visit to Jajpur district on Sunday to evaluate the circumstances in areas affected by cholera and to oversee the ongoing containment and treatment initiatives.
During his visit, the Health Minister engaged in comprehensive discussions with a Central team from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, various state government teams, and officials from the district administration in Jajpur.
The discussions centered around prevention strategies, treatment measures, ensuring the presence of adequate medical personnel, and other essential actions to combat the outbreak.
Speaking to the media, Mahaling emphasized the importance of seeking medical assistance from nearby hospitals instead of relying on unqualified practitioners and obtaining medicines from local pharmacies without a doctor’s consultation.
“Today, I visited over five Community Health Centres and the District Headquarters Hospital in Jajpur to assess the situation. Following the outbreak, teams from the Ministry of Health, the Directorate of Public Health, Odisha Food Safety, and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have reviewed the current status and identified the causes responsible for the outbreak. Our focus is on three primary areas: disinfecting water sources, breaking the chain of infection, and closely monitoring the situation to prevent further spread,” Mahaling stated.
He mentioned that district nodal officers, tasked with managing diarrhea and cholera cases, have compiled profiles of those affected and will administer doxycycline to their family members and recent contacts to avert further cholera transmission.
The Minister assured that the government is implementing all necessary measures to stop the spread of cholera to other regions of the state.
He also noted that numerous diarrhea cases have been reported in Kendrapara and Keonjhar districts. Mahaling is expected to visit the afflicted areas in Keonjhar district to assess the ground situation.
He informed reporters that the central team has collected water and food samples from the impacted regions to ascertain the true causes of the outbreak.
The Health Minister reported that approximately 12 deaths are suspected, but only five have been confirmed officially to date.
The remaining cases are still under investigation.
As per official reports, samples from 11 patients have tested positive for cholera infection so far.
Officials confirmed that 1,516 patients suffering from diarrhea have been admitted to various hospitals in Jajpur district as of June 15.
Out of these, 1,306 have been treated successfully while 210 are still receiving care in different hospitals throughout Jajpur. Notably, the union health ministry has dispatched a seven-member medical team and a three-member food safety team to Odisha.
Additionally, a four-member team from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has also arrived in Odisha to address the situation.
