Aizawl, April 24 (NationPress) In a pivotal initiative to bolster aviation security in India’s northeastern territory, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has officially assumed responsibility for the security of Lengpui Airport, the sole domestic airport in Mizoram, as of Thursday, according to officials.
Director General of Mizoram Police Anil Shukla formally inducted the CISF by presenting the CISF Flag to the Chief Airport Security Officer (CASO) of Lengpui Airport.
As per officials, an initial contingent of 121 CISF personnel, led by a Deputy Commandant, will take charge, with plans to increase the total to an authorized strength of 214 personnel, thereby replacing the existing joint security setup managed by Mizoram Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), which has been securing the airport since 1999.
With the CISF's induction, Lengpui Airport is now recognized as the 69th airport in India to fall under the safeguarding of the national civil aviation security force, an official stated.
Strategically located near Myanmar and Bangladesh, Lengpui Airport is crucial for India’s Act East Policy, aimed at enhancing connectivity and fostering economic relationships with Southeast Asia.
The official noted that Lengpui Airport, constructed in 1998 and managed by the state government, is situated roughly 30 km north of Aizawl.
“This deployment signifies a historic milestone as the first-ever CISF unit to be established in the northeastern state of Mizoram. The Force arrives with 25 years of experience in aviation security, substantially improving the safety infrastructure of this vital airport,” the official remarked.
Furthermore, the decision to station CISF personnel at Lengpui Airport aligns with the Government of India’s broader strategy to reinforce security measures across civil aviation facilities nationwide.
“In addition to their primary security duties, CISF personnel will collaborate with local authorities and other stakeholders to design and implement advanced security protocols that are efficient, user-friendly, and effective,” the official added.
These enhanced protocols are intended to ensure a secure and seamless travel experience for passengers while proactively addressing emerging threats such as terrorism, smuggling, and other illicit activities, as per the statement.
With this deployment, the CISF maintains its security presence across all Indian states and Union Territories, with the exception of Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Puducherry, and Lakshadweep.
During Thursday’s event, notable attendees included CISF Inspector General Vijay Prakash, Deputy Inspector General of CISF Deepak Verma, Additional Director General of Mizoram Police Meenu Chowdhary, Superintendent of Police, Security, C. Lalzahngoa, and representatives from various stakeholders, marking the commencement of CISF security operations at the airport.
