Kolkata, Jan 24 (NationPress) Authorities from the Manikchak Police Station in Malda district, West Bengal, apprehended a civic volunteer associated with the station on Friday, facing allegations of raping a woman who had been unwell for an extended period.
According to a report lodged by the victim's family, the woman’s condition worsened suddenly on Thursday evening, prompting her relatives to seek help from the accused, a civic volunteer living nearby.
The accused, who claimed to possess skills in spiritual healing, instructed the victim’s mother to fetch water from a nearby river.
While the mother went outside to gather water, the accused allegedly took advantage of the situation and raped the victim, who was left home alone.
The victim’s parents stated that she lost consciousness following the assault. Meanwhile, the accused managed to flee the scene.
Later that evening, after regaining consciousness, the victim disclosed the horrifying experience to her family.
Her relatives promptly reported the incident to the local Manikchak Police station, leading to the arrest of the accused civic volunteer later that afternoon.
The victim’s mother expressed her anguish to the media, stating, “Civic volunteers are meant to safeguard and assist the community. We sought help from him, but he exploited our trust to commit such a despicable act. We demand the harshest punishment for him.”
Earlier this week, another civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, previously with Kolkata Police, was sentenced to life imprisonment by a specialized court for the horrific rape and murder of a junior female doctor at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata last August.
